A COMMUNITY champion who has dedicated himself to campaigning for flood defences in Bewdley, and ensuring the town thrives, has been honoured with this year’s Civic Award.
Mayor of Bewdley councillor Nicole Harper, presented this year’s Civic Award to John Iles during the annual town meeting, held at St George’s Hall on Monday.
The accolade recognises outstanding voluntary service to the Bewdley community.
John has played a major role in the area, campaigning for flood defences and starting the Flood Forum.
He managed to get funding to set up the Bewdley Development Trust, which was formed in 2006 and aims to ensure that Bewdley remains a thriving market town in which to live, work and visit.
And John assisted with the redevelopment of St George’s Hall and has been a churchwarden at St Anne’s Church for the last five years.
He also played a key role in setting up the Wyre Community Land Trust, which cares for the landscape around the district.
The council received eight nominations this year.
All of the nominated candidates were awarded a thank you certificate by the mayor and John was presented with the Civic Award pendant.
