Coun Sharon Harvey writes for the Standard.
I AM honoured to have been elected Mayor of Bewdley for 2026/27.
It is a tremendous honour and one I never expected when I became an independent councillor three years ago.
I have been Mayor for three weeks, and it has already been a busy time.
During this period, I have visited several charities, officially opened two local premises, supported fellow councillors in neighbouring councils and attended numerous meetings.
I have even met with His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire, Beatrice Grant.
That said, I have enjoyed plenty of cake and tea. Thankfully, refreshments are no longer limited to alcohol.
I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little about my chosen Mayoral charities for the year.
Bewdley Dementia Support Group is a registered charity, relatively new and aims to support carers and persons experiencing problems.
St Georges Hall, Bewdley (Registered Charity). The hall was originally built in 1901 then started refurbishment in 2009. A brilliant community hub which is needing upgrading.
Pets as Therapy a registered charity that takes dogs and cats into schools, nursing homes, hospitals, creating everyday moments of magic to those in need.
Wyre Horseways a new community interest venture supporting people who have mental health and wellbeing issues.
I hope to raise the profile and funds in support of these worthy causes.
My priorities are to serve the community by encouraging business, supporting the voluntary sector, and promoting environmental and conservation initiatives.
Look out for my monthly updates – you may even spot me using my new selfie stick to share news about town events.
You are never too old to learn!
Stay safe and be kind.
