CHILDREN at Kidderminster’s Little Trinity Nursery have been embracing new flavours, colours and traditions as they learned about and celebrated the Indian festival of Diwali.
Often called the Festival of Lights, Diwali or Deepawali is celebrated over five days, beginning with Dhanteras and concluding with Bhai Dooj. This year Diwali takes place today (Monday, October 20).
Nursery manager Gaynor Carter said: “We celebrate Diwali so that the children can learn about and appreciate different cultures and beliefs, helping every child feel valued and respected.”
The youngsters really enjoyed making paper plate lamps, learning Diwali songs, listening to stories, looking at Rangoli patterns and tasting a variety of Indian foods.
Gaynor added: “The children loved getting involved with lots of creative activities, from making brightly coloured firework pictures and candle plate crafts to decorating henna hands and rangoli patterns.
“They also loved the sensory tray, filled with coloured sand, lights and candles.
“It’s a wonderful way for them to experience the joy of another culture, and we hope they now have a greater understanding of the importance of Diwali in the Hindu faith.”
