CITIZEN'S ADVICE COLUMN - Wyre Forest residents warned over scam calls

Kidderminster Editorial 15 hours ago

CITIZEN’S Advice Wyre Forest is urging local residents to be vigilant following reports that individuals have received telephone calls from people falsely claiming to represent the charity.

In this month’s column, the charity sheds light on what has been happening.

The callers have reportedly identified themselves as being from Citizens Advice and suggested a fee was payable for advice or assistance.

Citizens Advice Wyre Forest wants to make it clear this is not how the organisation operates.

Zena Dalton, Citizens Advice Wyre Forest’s chief executive officer, said they were concerned about people in the area being targeted.

“We want to reassure residents our advice services are free, confidential, independent and impartial.

“We do not charge for advice, and would never ask people to make payments in return for receiving help.”

Citizens Advice provides support on a wide range of issues, including debt, benefits, housing, employment and consumer matters.

While advisers may occasionally contact clients regarding an ongoing enquiry, any unexpected call requesting payment or personal financial information should be treated with caution.

Residents who receive calls like this should not provide bank details, passwords, or other sensitive information.

Anyone doubting the authenticity of a call, should end the conversation and contact Citizens Advice Wyre Forest directly using the official contact details listed on its website or published literature.

Anyone who believes they may have been targeted by a scam should visit: reportfraud.police.uk to report the incident to Action Fraud and seek advice as soon as possible.

Friends, family members and carers are also urged to share this warning, particularly with older or more vulnerable residents often targeted by fraudsters.

Remember: Citizens Advice does not charge for advice.

If someone claiming to represent the charity asks for payment, treat it as a warning sign and verify their identity before taking any action.

Anyone with concerns about a scam should call 0808 278 7891 or email:[email protected] to speak to an adviser.
