A COMMEMORATIVE tree has been planted at The Civic in Stourport to commemorate the venue’s 60th anniversary.

The Civic building is used by the community, houses social groups and musical events for all ages and is a place to celebrate a special occasion.

The tree was donated by Andy Jones, the owner of Vanguard Tree Surgery.

Andy and the manager of the hall, Caroline Caldwell, are members of the local BNI Wyre Forest Chapter, which also supports the Civic Hall.

Andy said he donated an apple tree to represent how The Civic kept giving to the community.

Sally Eastwood, a trustee at The Civic, added: “The tree is a lovely gift, and we are really proud to continue the work of The Civic.”

The Civic Hall first opened its doors in May 1966 and, just over a year later, an unsigned rock group, the N’Betweens, gigged at the hall.

The band later went on to rename itself SLADE and released one of the most iconic Christmas singles ever.

Robert Plant and Jimmy Page performed on The Civic stage in the 1980s after Led Zeppelin had split and the band’s drummer, John Bonham, played there before his death.
