Future of Kidderminster's parks and play areas up for debate

Ryan Smith 10th Feb, 2026

THE FUTURE of several Kidderminster parks, play areas and open spaces is up for debate.

Wyre Forest District Council’s Cabinet is considering transferring the assets to Kidderminster Town Council at its meeting on Wednesday, February 11.

The areas being considered are Spennells Park, Springfield Park, Bewdley Hill Wood, Talbot Park, King George V playing fields and the play areas in Oxford Street, Jerusalem Walk, Willowfield Drive and Forester Way.

Local government reorganisation means the district council will not exist in the future, with the authority expected to be defunct by April 2028.

Since the announcement, the Cabinet has been liaising with town councils regarding their interest in taking over more assets.

The district council has had a localism agenda for more than a decade and works with other organisations, including town and parish councils, to safeguard services and facilities that are vital and beneficial to the community.

Stourport and Bewdley already transferred

In November, Wyre Forest District Council agreed transfers to Stourport-on-Severn and Bewdley Town Councils and hopes to do the same with Kidderminster Town Council.

If the Cabinet agrees to the transfer, an advert will be placed in a local paper to highlight its intention to ‘dispose of the open space’ – a requirement of the Local Government Act 1972.

Financial support would be available for the transfers, which would take place in April 2027.
