'Help out there for moving to Universal Credit' - This month's Wyre Forest Citizen's Advice Column

Kidderminster Editorial 31st Aug, 2025

MANY Wyre Forest residents who currently receive benefits are receiving letters from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) about moving onto Universal Credit.

Known as ‘migration notices’, these inform people they need to apply for Universal Credit within a set time frame.

For many, this has meant increased contact with the DWP and a new layer of worry in their daily lives.

For some residents, switching to Universal Credit feels like a big step.

The system is digital, although there is a telephone option for those who may lack the confidence or skills to manage an online claim.

Others may feel anxious about talking directly to the DWP, worried about making mistakes that could affect their payments.

Even for those who are used to filling in forms, the process can feel overwhelming when so much depends on getting it right.

Citizens Advice has recognised how daunting this can be and runs a dedicated helpline for people moving onto Universal Credit.

Advisers can talk residents through the process step-by-step, helping with everything from setting up an account to checking what information is needed.

This support can make a huge difference, turning what feels like a mountain into something more manageable.

Behind every migration notice is a person, often already juggling financial pressures, health concerns, or caring responsibilities.

For them, the thought of navigating a new benefit system can add extra stress.

Having someone to explain things clearly and patiently can give people the reassurance they need.

The migration to Universal Credit is a major change, but no one should feel they have to face it alone.

In Wyre Forest, Citizens Advice is ready to support people through the transition. Whether it’s a quick question or ongoing guidance, a simple phone call can provide the help and confidence residents need to make the move successfully.

People can contact an adviser through the CAB’s free Help to Claim phone service.

Advisers are available 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday: England: 0800 144 8 444 or visit: wyreforestcab.org.uk or email: [email protected] to contact Citizens Advice Wyre Forest.
