'Honest George Holloway' - Kidderminster Chartist pioneer featured in new book

Kidderminster Editorial 19th Oct, 2025

WYRE FOREST Historical Research Group is turning a new page in its own past as it hosts its first ever book launch.

At its next meeting, at 2pm on October 28 at The Museum of Carpet, the society will host historian

Mike Loftus who will give a talk on Honest George Holloway ahead the release of his new book on the same subject.

Holloway was a pioneer in Kidderminster’s political history as the joint leader of the the town’s branch of Chartists following a varied career as a publican, a carpet manufacturer for a brief time and then an auctioneer.

As a renowned figure in Kidderminister’s past, Holloway’s work helped campaign for a six-point charter of reforms for a more democratic political system.

Following the First Reform Act of 1832, many non-property owners were unhappy at being excluded from voting.

The Chartist movement rose in response to the growing disappointment and identified major points of reform which became foundational to the organisation’s agenda.

These points aimed for universal suffrage for every man over the age of 21, secret ballots, no property qualifications for Members of Parliament, the payment of MPs and for all constituencies to be of equal size and annual elections.

In the early years of the Chartism, there were a number of violent demonstrations which were firmly repressed.

Holloway earned the respect of all his political opponents such as John Brinton, because of his belief in non-violent methods.

And it was this peaceful approach which earned him the ‘Honest George Holloway’ nickname.

He later became a Liberal councillor and ultimately, an Alderman.

Admission to the October 28 meeting is £2 for members and £3 for non-members.

Copies of Mike’s book will be available to buy on the day.
