AMBITIOUS new plans for the key Bridge Street site in Stourport-on-Severn have been unveiled by Wyre Forest District Council.

And now residents, businesses and visitors are being urged to view the proposals in full and let the authority know what they think of them.

The feedback will be used to help define the look and feel of the Bridge Street site. Most recently, it has been used as a temporary car park and has long been recognised as a key opportunity to reconnect the town centre with the historic canal basin.

The idea is to create a building with a large and open flexible space suitable for markets, dining, exhibitions, and community events – these could be everyday activities or larger or civic events.

Coun Dan Morehead, Wyre Forest District Council’s cabinet member for economic regeneration, planning and the green agenda, said: “We’re delighted to be able to share new ideas for this important site in the heart of the town centre.

“We’d really encourage people to come along, see the plans for themselves and talk to the team which is helping to bring this vision to life.

“Thoughtful redevelopment at Bridge Street will play an important role in supporting the ongoing regeneration of the surrounding area and enhancing Stourport’s unique character.”

The future of Bridge Street has been carefully considered over many years. In 2005, the council adopted the Bridge Street Basins Link Development Brief as a Supplementary Planning Document, setting out a broad vision for the wider area. Despite several attempts to secure a development partner, progress was limited, due to viability challenges at the time.

The site was listed as an Asset of Community Value in December 2024 following a nomination by Stourport Civic Society, however no bids were received within the statutory period.

In 2025, the council formally rescinded the document as, it said, it no longer reflected current economic, policy and market conditions

The council is now working with local architects One Creative Environments to explore new, realistic options for the site in response to today’s needs and opportunities.

Coun Morehead added: “Our aim is to create an attractive and welcoming place that draws people in, supports local businesses, and helps deliver the long-term aspirations for Stourport-on-Severn.

“We have already shared these plans with Stourport Town Council and The Civic Society as part of our commitment to working in partnership to deliver a scheme that everyone can be proud of.”

The public consultation event will take place at Stourport Civic Hall from 10am to 1pm next Saturday, February 28.

There is no need to book – people can just drop in to view the proposed plans for 8 Bridge Street and chat with the Wyre Forest District Council team, the project manager and the architects.

Feedback will help shape the next steps for this important town centre site.

In addition – or as an alternative to visiting the public consultation – people can view the proposals here on the council’s web page.

Responses to the plans must be submitted before 5pm on March 19.
