RESIDENTS at an extra care housing development in Kidderminster got to try their hand at the harp, thanks to a town musician paying them a visit.

Harpist Laima Nikita brought her music, along with some heartwarming moments, to Berrington Court independent living scheme.

Laima delivered a harp recital, followed by a workshop for those living at Berrington Court and she also reunited one resident with the musical instrument she used to play in her younger days.

The idea came to Laima from her belief that ‘it is never too late to try something new’.

Harp music has been shown to have countless benefits, including cognitive stimulation, enhanced fine motor skills and improving emotional wellbeing.

A delighted Laima said: “Today’s session was truly rewarding – I had the pleasure of connecting with residents and hearing their personal musical journeys.

“One particularly memorable moment was meeting a resident who had played the harp in her youth.

“It was a touching reminder of how music can rekindle cherished memories.

“Playing the harp engages and strengthens neural pathways, while listening to live harp music promotes relaxation, a sense of calm and improved sleep quality.”

Berrington Court’s lifestyle co-ordinator, Angela McGuire, added: “Music is so important and lifts the spirits.

“I like to promote all sorts of meaningful activities for the tenants at Berrington Court.

“It was so special seeing Wendy, a deaf tenant, being reunited with the harp she played in her youth.

“She was able to feel the vibrations.”
