THE CHAIRMAN of Wyre Forest District Council led a flag raising ceremony to mark Merchant Navy Day on Wednesday.

Coun Paul Harrison was joined by standard bearers at the council’s headquarters to raise the Red Ensign flag in a special ceremony to honour the courage and dedication of Merchant Navy seafarers — past and present.

Merchant Navy Day honours and remembers the sacrifices of the often forgotten and invisible, but hard-working Merchant Navy seafarers, who kept Britain afloat during both the First and Second World Wars.

The day also celebrates the dependence on the modern-day merchant navy which is responsible for carrying more than 90 per cent of the UK’s imports.

Coun Harrison said: “Merchant Navy Day offers us a chance to reflect on and appreciate the bravery and dedication of all who have served in the Merchant Navy.

“The flag-raising ceremony is a meaningful way to pay tribute, and we warmly invite residents to take part in this act of recognition and support.”
