Independent Custody Volunteers needed at Kidderminster Police Station

Ryan Smith 9th Feb, 2026

KIDDERMINSTER Police Station has called on those interested in the criminal justice system who want to give back to their community to consider becoming an Independent Custody Visitor.

Independent Custody Visitors are a key part of the justice system and are tasked with making sure  the rights of those in police custody are being maintained.

The volunteer role is supported by West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion and sees those enrolled visit custody suites across the county.

The visits provide an independent check on the way in which detainees are held, in accordance with the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 guidelines.

These also help foster better public understanding and confidence in the way prisoners are treated.

To become a custody visitor, people need to be at least 18 years old and independent of the police, meaning serving police officers, staff or special constables will not be considered.

A West Mercia Police spokesperson said: “These amazing volunteers are a key part of the justice system, making sure the rights of those in police custody are being maintained.

“Going behind the scenes of police custody, independent custody visitors get to see things normal members of the public don’t.”
