Kidderminster Short Breaks wins No Barriers - Mike Oborski Award

Kidderminster Editorial 9th May, 2026

THE KIDDERMINSTER Short Breaks (KSB) residential home which offers services to children with disabilities has won a No Barriers – Mike Oborski Award, writes Zaynab Hamdy.

The accolades from Wyre Forest District Council recognises KSB’s outstanding work in improving access to services and opportunities for children and young people.

KBS is a Worcestershire County Council service that provides overnight short breaks for children and young people with learning difficulties or challenging behaviour.

The service offers children valuable time away from their families in a safe, supportive environment, while also providing families with much-needed respite.

During their stays, children are supported to work towards their Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) aims – with strong focus on preparation for adulthood.

This includes developing essential life skills such as cooking, personal care, road and water safety and building confidence.

KSB places a strong emphasis on engagement with the local community, ensuring children have meaningful opportunities to access environments and activities beyond the home.

Among them are swimming, park visits, shopping trips, bowling, cinema outings and other experiences which may not always be accessible to them elsewhere.

Through these activities, children are encouraged to explore their interests, build social skills and enjoy positive experiences that support their wellbeing and personal development.

The No Barriers – Mike Oborski Award recognises achievements that remove barriers and create inclusive opportunities for people across the district.

It reflects the dedication, creativity and commitment of the KBS staff team in ensuring children and young people can access support for their wellbeing and personal development.

Worcestershire County Council’s team manager Stuart Hart and group manager Claire Foster accepted the award on behalf of the team, thanking Wyre Forest District Council for the recognition and praising staff for their committment.

Adam Johnston, Worcestershire County Council’s director of children’s services, said: “This award is a testament to the passion, professionalism and teamwork demonstrated everyday by the team at Kidderminister Short Breaks.

“They make a real difference to the families they support, and this further shows their ongoing commitment to ensuring there truly are no barriers for the children and families who access the service.”
