Kidderminster Specsavers staff inspiring young people to optometry careers

Kidderminster Editorial 30th Mar, 2026

TEAMS from Specsavers in Kidderminster have been inspiring students to take up careers in optometry at two events in the county, writes Chinaza Eke.

Staff members from three Specsavers manufacturing and distribution (M&D) sites have discussed opportunities, with more than 2,000 students during the Skills Expo Worcestershire at Sixways in Worcester and a careers event at Hagley High School’s careers fair.

Representatives from Vision Labs, Lens Online and International Glazing Services (IGS) hosted an interactive stand where students could engage in a skills session and play optometry-related games.

The three businesses provide lens surfacing, stocking and distributing lenses and contact lenses to Specsavers.

Eight team members discussed career pathways available across M&D sites, revealing roles students had not previously thought about.

Martin Hammond, head of quality, business systems and health and safety, Emma Cox, head of customer service and outbound logistics, and Mark Edwards, head of environmental and facilities management UK M&D, all shared their career journeys.

They spoke to the students about skills needed to work in the industry and the opportunities available, including engineering, apprenticeships, lab production and logistics.

Jayne Cole, HR business partner M&D said: “The students were incredibly engaged and keen to learn about the optics world.”
