KIDDERMINSTER business leaders remain optimistic about the town’s future, despite numerous firms announcing their closure in recent months.
And Kidderminster BID’s new manager has revealed what the organisation was doing to help businesses stay afloat and thrive in the town.
Last month, Geek Retreat on Worcester Street and Newey’s Deals, in the Swan Shopping Centre, announced they would be shutting their doors.
These businesses are just two of several to close in recent months, with other notable names including the Entertainer and the Market Stall Kidderminster.
Reasons for businesses closing have included complaints of a lack of footfall and rising business rates, while others said it was not commercially viable to remain open in the town.
Kidderminster BID is tasked with helping businesses boom.
New BID manager, Emma Lawrence, told the Standard: “It’s always sad to see local businesses close, as every closure represents someone’s hard work and investment in our town.
“Unfortunately, we’re seeing this pattern not just in Kidderminster but across the UK’s high streets, as many businesses continue to face pressures such as rising costs and changes in consumer spending habits.
“However, it’s important to recognise that Kidderminster also has many success stories and new openings, with independent and national brands continuing to invest in the town.
“Our role at Kidderminster BID is to support all businesses, both established and new, so they can thrive in this challenging environment.
“We know there’s still work to do, and we’re committed to working closely with our businesses, local partners, and the community to help Kidderminster adapt, recover and grow.
“Despite current challenges, we remain optimistic about the town’s future and the strength of its local business community.”
The BID is helping levy payers save on costs through partnerships and access to grants, support, and advice.
To improve safety, it is investing in a Town Centre team, additional security coverage and gardening to create a safer, more welcoming town.
The BID said it would continue to promote local businesses through town centre events and campaigns, encouraging people to ‘shop local’.
And it added it would continue to look at more environmental improvements and delivering projects – such as the underpass murals and floral displays – to create a more vibrant and attractive town centre.
