Meeting held to discuss where Stourport's VAS signs should go to combat speeding

Kidderminster Editorial 13th Sep, 2025

THE VEHICLE Activated Speed (VAS) sign joint working party on Stourport Town Council held its annual meeting to review data collected by the devices.

The signs are rotated around the town over the course of 12 months and the data from the previous year is looked at.

Discussions are held on the signs’ locations and ideas are put forward for any new locations, based on results and any recent community concerns raised.

Representatives on the joint working party include Stourport Town councillors Dale Morris, John Thomas and Berenice Dawes, the town council clerk Sue Saunders and Wyre Forest District Councillors Jackie Griffiths and Alan Sutton.

Worcestershire County Councillor Karl Perks and highways liaison officer Dean Caswell, along with PC Sam Maher and PC Mike Roberts from the Stourport Police Safer Neighbourhood Team are also on the working party.

How the signs work

The signs are a visual reminder to drivers, prompting them to reduce their speed if they are exceeding the limit or highlighting the legal limit of the area.

They are proven to reduce drivers’ speeds and encourage motorists to adhere to the limits.

West Mercia Police says this improves compliance with speed regulations and promotes safer driving behaviour.

Stourport Town Council secured funding from the West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner’s road safety fund and has bought two newer versions of the VAS which are in the process of being installed at designated locations.

This year Coun Perks installed a newer version VAS sign on Lickhill Road and has transferred this to the town council to incorporate the data results into the working party.

The signs also collect data relating to traffic and speeding patterns which can be used to form traffic management strategies, identify high risk areas and develop targeted interventions to enhance road safety.
