'Proud of Green Flag for town park' - Mayor of Kidderminster Doug Hine's monthly column

Kidderminster Editorial 29th Aug, 2025

TODAY (Friday, August 29) I will have the pleasure to raise the Green Flag at Broadwaters Mill Park, in Broadwaters, Kidderminster.

In conjunction with the flag-raising, the Friends of Broadwaters Mill Park volunteers have organised a lovely family-friendly day of presentations, competitions, games, music, and a variety of other activities.

At Kidderminster Town Council, we are thrilled to achieve Green Flag status for this park. The Green Flag Award scheme identifies and acknowledges parks and green spaces that are managed to a high standard, serving as the benchmark for excellence in the management of recreational outdoor areas throughout the United Kingdom and internationally.

The scheme is managed by ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ under licence from the UK government. Any public green space can be submitted for consideration, to be judged by experienced volunteers on a range of criteria.

The purpose and aims of the Green Flag Award are:

  • To ensure that everybody has access to quality green and other open spaces, irrespective of where they live.
  • To ensure that these spaces are appropriately managed and meet the needs of the communities that they serve.
  • To establish standards of good management.
  • To promote and share good practice amongst managers of green spaces.
  • To recognise and reward the hard work of managers, staff and volunteers.

Currently, Kidderminster Town Council manages three parks – Broadwaters, St Georges and Baxter Gardens. With the abolition of district councils in a couple of years’ time, the Kidderminster community can be confident that our parks team can grow and take on further parks in the town and raise them to a high standard, too.
