Second World War enigma machine coming to Kidderminster

Ryan Smith 30th May, 2026

A RARE, Second World War Enigma coding machine will be in Kidderminster next month.

Dr Mark Baldwin, also known as Doctor Enigma, will bring the machine to a meeting of the Wyre Forest University of the Third Age (u3a), at Kidderminster Harriers Social and Supporters’ Club, at 2pm on June 15.

In his presentation, Dr Baldwin will explain why the German Enigma machine posed such a challenge to Allied codebreakers during the Second World War.

It was a complex and ingenious coding device which the Germans believed would provide total security for millions of their wireless messages.

British brains at Bletchley broke the codes, however, and the information thus derived was of utmost importance during the war.

Dr Baldwin is an experienced speaker who has delivered more than 1,000 presentations on the Enigma and codebreaking.

Kidderminster u3a aims to encourage older people to share knowledge, skills and interests in a friendly environment.

Entry to the meeting will be free for all Wyre Forest u3a members.

Interested non-members are also welcome to go along and examine the Enigma machine.
