'So many highlights in the town' - Mayor of Bewdley's monthly diary

Kidderminster Editorial 4th Oct, 2025

Coun Nicole Harper writes for the Standard.

SINCE I became mayor in May last year, I have taken part in many interesting and enjoyable activities.

My first event was the Mayor Making ceremony when the title and the mayor’s chain was passed from the previous mayor, Coun Ian Latimer, to me at St George’s Hall and

I had to make my first speech. A stressful experience.

Some of the other highlights were the Bewdley and Stourport Carnivals, the Kemp butterfly release, the Bewdley Cherry Fayre and the visit to the German twin town of Vellmar where, as Mayor of Bewdley and Honorary President of the Twinning Association, I had to deliver a speech to over 500 guests in a language I do not speak.

I have unveiled plaques, opened fairs, events and venues, celebrated the flood defences work on Beales Corner and went to concerts in Bewdley and neighbouring towns.

I have also led and attended several military ceremonies in Bewdley and the Wyre Forest.

One important role of mayor is to support charities and voluntary organisations so I regularly go to quizzes, dinners, auctions and end up buying a lot of raffle tickets.

To support my own charities, I ran my first fundraising event last Friday, September 26 – a quiz with fish and chips, held at St George’s Hall and attended by 120 people.

Prizes for the Raffle were donated by very generous businesses in Bewdley.

My second Mayor’s Surgery will take place at the Mayor’s Parlour from 6pm to 7.30pm on Tuesday, October 7.
