State-of-the-art laser to improve bladder and kidney treatment at Kidderminster Hospital

Kidderminster Editorial 6th Dec, 2025

A STATE-OF-THE-ART laser is set to benefit the treatment of countless patients at Kidderminster Hospital thanks to an incredible £200,000 charitable donation, writes Neil Gordon.

The Wyre Forest-based League of Friends donated the amazing amount to the hospital’s urology department so surgeons could better treat patients with kidney and bladder stones.

The funds have been used to purchase a Moses laser costing £125,000 and other additional equipment which totalled £75,000.

The equipment very effectively pulverises kidney and bladder stones so the debris can pass out naturally through the body’s system and results in surgery being carried out more quickly and in a minimally invasive manner.

The laser can also be used to treat enlarged prostate by removal of the gland in large chunks, before then cutting the tissue chunks into smaller pieces for easier removal.

Consultant urological surgeon, Vincent Koo, said: “We are currently carrying out an initiative to increase our day-case work in Kidderminster and this machine plays a key role in enabling us to achieve that.

“This brings great benefit to the local population and means many prostate patients who previously had to travel outside the area for laser treatment can now have the work done In Kidderminster.”

The League of Friends has donated more than £500,000 to the hospital in the last two years as it continues to maintain and extend national health services for residents in Wyre Forest.
