THE now-defunct Stourport Carnival organising group is set keep its legacy alive by making its leftover cash available to local good causes.
The Stourport Carnival Society, which has run the 100-year-old event, dissolved due to a lack of volunteers last month, casting doubt on the future of the carnival.
However, members have decided to leave a farewell gift to the people of Stourport by making the society’s remaining funds ready to donate to local charities, community groups and organisations.
To qualify, applicants will need to be based in Stourport-on-Severn, and they must apply by Sunday, February 22.
A spokesperson for the Stourport Carnival Society said: “For 100 years, Stourport Carnival has been at the heart of our town’s celebrations.
“From the first carnival in 1925 to our incredible Centenary last year, Stourport Carnival Society has loved every moment of bringing our community together.
“As many of you know, due to a lack of volunteers for key roles, we have had to dissolve the Society.
“While this is the end of an era, we want our final act to be one of support for the amazing local charities and groups that make Stourport-on-Severn so special.
“We are inviting local charities, community groups, and organisations to apply for a donation from our remaining funds.
“We want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has supported Stourport Carnival Society over the last century.
“Please help us spread the word so we can ensure these funds go where they are needed most.
“Let’s make sure the Stourport Carnival Society’s legacy continues to help Stourport thrive.”
The Stourport Carnival was first held in 1925 and has typically taken place on the first Saturday of September each year.
The popular extravaganza’s land parade typically features floats, marching bands, small vehicles and walking entries.
The event also typically features live entertainment and a fireworks display.
Archived footage shows that in 1956, British boxing hero Freddie Mills, who once fought for the world light heavyweight title, attended the event and crowned that year’s Carnival Queen.
