Stourport gearing up to celebrate 100 years of carnival as appeal for previous Queens is launched

THE ORGANISERS of Stourport Carnival are gearing up to celebrate the event’s centenary this year.

The carnival, which is free to attend and takes place on Saturday, September 6, features a land parade through the town, two river parades and boasts a host of live entertainment throughout the day and evening, along with a variety of stalls at Riverside Meadows.

And, as this year’s Carnival Queen and other roles were chosen, the organisers are hoping previous Stourport Carnival Queens will come forward to be part of the parade.

Janet Allen, Stourport Carnival treasurer and Queen’s Court Organiser, told the Standard: “The carnival started in 1925 and has been going for 100 years this year.

“The only time carnivals were not held were during some of the war years and throughout Covid.

“There used to be a Carnival King and Queen and for the first three years, these were both men.

“It has developed into a Carnival Queen, Princess, Rosebud and Junior Prince and Senior Prince.

“Numbers of entrants had dwindled for some of the years but we had an excellent response this year.”

There were five vying to be Queen, 15 for Rosebud, 11 for the Princess role and two each for the Junior and Senior Prince positions.

This year’s Carnival Queen is Daisy Innes-Davies, 15, with Ani Hudson, 13, as the Princess and Morgan Lander, eight, as Rosebud.

The Senior Prince is Joshua Weaver, aged 11, and Riley Lander will be the Junior Prince, five.

Janet added: “We have all those roles filled now and what we would really love is for some of the previous Carnival Queens to line up in the parades.

“We had one who held the role in 1953 get in touch but the more the merrier – we will provide sashes for them to wear on the day which will be a nostalgic look back at 100 years of Stourport Carnival.”

Previous Carnival Queens should email Janet at: [email protected] or Laura Minor at: [email protected] to register their interest about being involved.

100 years of memories

The organisers would also love to hear people’s memories of previous Stourport Carnivals and see their photographs.

These can also be emailed to Janet and Laura at the above addresses.
