THE OWNERS of a Kidderminster jujutsu business will be taking on a different kind of fight when they climb Snowdon to buy a life-saving defibrillator.
Jaidan Tiene is planning to hike up Snowdon with the aim being to raise enough cash to buy and fit a defibrillator kit on the Hurcott Road Costcutter.
It is hoped this defibrillator will be accessed by anyone in the area.
Jaidan runs Taijutsu Kai Kidderminster, a jujutsu club near the Greenhill estate
He said he wanted to complete the challenge to give something back to the community.
“After doing some research, I realised that although there are some defibrillators in our community, there are just not enough. This goes for most estates in Kidderminster.
“Think honestly, where is the closest defibrillator to your home, and would you be able to get there in under five minutes? For the majority of people, the answer is no.
“We believe this is a very achievable target, and it’s something for everyone, not just one charity.
“I also hope we can inspire other sports groups or any community club to try and do something similar to make our town safe for its people.
“I can’t thank everyone enough for those who have donated, let’s keep spreading the word to help reach our goal.”
There are more than 30,000 cardiac arrests annually in the UK. Research shows that without the use of a defibrillator within the first three to five minutes, the chances of survival are less than 10 per cent.
However, if a defibrillator is used within that time, the chances of survival can go up to between 50 and 70 per cent.
Around 72 per cent of cardiac arrests happen at home and less than one in 10 people currently survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
So far, more than £700 has been raised towards the £1,500 target via a GoFundMe page.
