TRIBUTES have been paid as Kidderminster prepares to celebrate the life of a much-loved town priest who ‘was a great pastor, listener and friend.’
Canon Rosemary Lawley passed away peacefully on January 11.
She was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in November 2024, but went on to help raise vital funds for a charity which helps others in a similar position.
Tributes have poured in from across the Diocese, with fond memories shared from those whom she married and former colleagues, including the former Bishop of Worcester, John Inge.
Rosemary was ordained in Lichfield in 2003 and, following her curacy, served in Kidderminster as a parish priest and Industrial Chaplain in the Faith at Work in Worcestershire team until her retirement.
She was made an Honorary Canon of Worcester Cathedral in 2015.
A service giving thanks to Rosemary’s ministry was held at Worcester Cathedral in July 2025.
The service raised cash for MNDA, a cause close to Rosemary’s heart following her own Motor Neurone Disease diagnosis just months earlier.
A statement on behalf of Rosemary’s family, published on Facebook, described her as a wonderful person and described their ‘great sadness’ at a ‘profound loss.’
A statement from Kidderminster Ismere, which brought together six churches in the north of the town, said: “It is with sadness that we let you know that Revd Canon Rosemary Lawley died peacefully following her battle with MND.
“Rose was a huge part of Kidderminster Ismere as Team Vicar and then Rector until her retirement.
“More importantly, she was a great friend, pastor and listener, always finding time for anyone.
“She was also a big part of the Faith at Work team, visiting workplaces and factories. She will be greatly missed.
“Our love and prayers are especially with her family- may she rest in peace and rise in glory.”
John Inge, who served as Bishop of Worcester between 2007 and 2024, also paid tribute.
He said: “May Rose rest in peace and rise in glory. I shall always retain happy memories of her and give thanks for her ministry.”
Many of those whom Rosemary married paid their own tributes.
One said: “This is so sad to read. Rose married my husband and me back in 2017 at St Peter’s church in Cookley. She was such a lovely lady.”
Another who Rosemary married described her as a lovely lady and a wonderful, beautiful person.
Her funeral will take place on Monday, February 16, at midday at St Mary’s in Kidderminster, with all welcome to celebrate her life.
The family have politely requested no flowers; however, donations will be collected on behalf of the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MDNA).
