THERE will be a very old true crime mystery heading to The Rose Theatre in Kidderminster.
The Ballad of Maria Marten runs from February 23 to 28.
The story is set in the summer of 1827 in a red barn in Suffolk where Maria Marten is awaiting her lover.
A year later, hidden under a grain sack under the floor, her body is found.
The gruesome details of Maria Marten’s murder have been part of stories for nearly 200 years. How did it happen? Who did it? And did she deserve it?
Playwright Beth Flintoff wanted to ask another question – what if the women who loved Maria were not afraid, subdued or anxious but were indeed very, very angry.
Flintoff spent time with incredible women who had experienced domestic violence or abuse and decided she was not going to focus on the murderer and that it was not going to be a play about violence.
The play is about the people who experience it – it is a play about love.
The Ballad of Maria Marten, which is not very well known, was first performed in 2018 – a reworking of the traditional Murder in the Red Barn.
The story is now told from Maria’s perspective, focusing on the resilience of women.
It is a thrilling and dramatic exploration of class, prejudice and female friendship.
The Nonentities are performing with a cast of six women, taking on 12 roles – some of them male characters.
All other roles – directors, prompt, design, props and wardrobe are also taken by females.
Anne Booth, publicity manager and organising props for this play, said: “As we rehearse the play, there is a noticeable bond and camaraderie between all members, supporting and encouraging one another.”
