A VOLUNTEER who is based at Kidderminster Police Station has been recognised for his work in protecting the area’s heritage.
Bill Matthews attended the Heritage and Cultural Property Crime Awareness Workshop.
Bill is part of West Mercia’s Heritage Watch which helps police officers to protect historical sites, monuments and artefacts across the three counties from heritage related crime.
Bill, who has volunteered with the force for more than two years, said the course taught him heritage was not just limited to churches and listed buildings but that it could also include significant sites of interest nowadays. He was presented with his certificate by Insp Liz Warner from the force’s Problem-Solving Hub at Kidderminster.
Mark Harrison, head of heritage crime at Historic England, said he was delighted to recognise Bill’s commitment and contribution.
“Bill’s dedication to protecting our shared heritage is a shining example of how community volunteers can make a real difference.
“Heritage crime is a serious issue that threatens the places and objects that connect us to our past.
“Volunteers like Bill play a vital role in supporting police officers and heritage professionals to safeguard these irreplaceable assets.
“His work in north Worcestershire – visiting culturally and historically significant sites, engaging with local communities, and reporting concerns – demonstrates the proactive and collaborative spirit that Heritage Watch embodies.
“It’s particularly encouraging to see Bill’s understanding of heritage broaden through the workshop, recognising heritage includes not only traditional landmarks like churches and listed buildings, but also contemporary sites of cultural significance.”
He added that awareness was crucial in ensuring the approach to heritage protection remained inclusive and forward looking.
Mr Harrison commended West Mercia Police for their continued support of Heritage Watch and for promoting volunteer opportunities which empowered local people to take an active role in preserving the places that mattered most to them.
“Bill’s achievement is a testament to the value of training, community engagement and partnership in tackling heritage crime,” he added.
“Congratulations, Bill – and thank you for your service.”
