A WASSAIL and Singers Night is set to be held at St Peter’s Community Church, Meredeth Green, Birchen Coppice.
The event will take place at 6.30pm on January 23 and will feature Morris dancers, traditional music, complimentary non-alcoholic mulled Wassail punch, apple juice and sausage buns.
The first part of the evening will be the Wassail and the second part is the singers night which will feature a few shanties. Other singers and musicians are welcome to join those already performing.
A spokesperson for the event said: “Come and join us – there is no need to book a spot, just come along.”
Admission is by a suggested donation of £4 which includes food and the wassail punch. People are invited to take along their own alcoholic drinks if they want.
Wassailing is a traditional English winter celebration, originating from Anglo Saxon times.
They involve singing, dancing and drinking spiced cider, ale or apple juice to toast ‘good health’ and in a bid to ensure a good harvest for the year ahead.
They are often very noisy occasions where fruit trees are blessed to help them be bountiful.
