Worcestershire Sauce icon Lea & Perrins puts cheese on toast in history books

THE PERFECT slice of cheese on toast has officially been immortalised in Worcestershire, thanks to famed local sauce producer Lea & Perrins.

The iconic sauce maker has preserved a slice of cheese on toast, created in clay and resin, to be displayed at the Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum.

It showcases the only way the sauce producer feels it should be enjoyed – with Worcestershire Sauce spread directly onto the toast before the cheese, so it caramelises into the bread.

According to Lea & Perrins, over a third of Brits put sauce on top of the cheese, losing out on maximum flavour. The preserved slice joins the Lea & Perrins archive collection and will be on public display from September 23, 2025.

Lea & Perrins director of taste elevation, Thiago Rapp, said: “By preserving a slice in the Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum, we’re making sure future generations know the only way to make delicious Lea & Perrins cheese on toast.”

To mark the occasion, Lea & Perrins has also released limited-edition bottles featuring a new label reminding people of the correct method.

These are available exclusively at The Guildhall Worcester shop from September 15 for £2.50, while stocks last.

Helen Large, museum audience manager at Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum said: “Lea & Perrins has always been at the heart of Worcester, and its collection is one of our most loved displays. Adding the nation’s favourite cheese on toast couldn’t be more fitting.”
