WYRE Forest fundraisers who enlisted the help of former Who Wants To be A Millionaire star Chris Tarrant have raised a healthy sum for vital research into potentially life-saving cancer treatments and cures.

The district’s fundraising committee for Cancer Research UK reported at its annual meeting that £23,365 had been collected over the past year from a variety of events and donations.

Donations, including in memoriams, amounted to £11,000, while last year’s lunch with guest speaker, TV personality Chris Tarrant, raised £5,400.

A further £2,755 was generated for the charity at the annual Rainbow Cancer Care Foundation Golf Day while Anne-Marie Simms donated £1,000 from the sale of her Bewdley calendars.

Stourport photographer Peter Greenwood raised £450 from the sale of his calendars and a jazz night in Ombersley, arranged by the committee’s life-president Peter Tomlinson, raised £470.

Giving his report, treasurer David Smith said: “We are very grateful to everyone who supported our events and to those who raised money on our behalf, taking the total donated to Cancer Research UK via our small committee to well over £1million.”
