THE CHAIRMAN of Wyre Forest District Council will raise the flag for Merchant Navy Day next week.
The special event to highlight and celebrate the UK’s Merchant Navy seafarers will take place at Wyre Forest District Council’s headquarters on Wednesday, September 3.
Members of the public are invited to join service organisations to commemorate Merchant Navy Day at the flag-flying ceremony at Wyre Forest House, Finepoint Way, Kidderminster.
The ceremony will start with a formal welcome from the chairman of Wyre Forest District Council, Coun Paul Harrison, at 9.45am.
Coun Harrison, who will be joined by standard bearers, will then raise the flag.
Merchant Navy Day honours and remembers the sacrifices of the often forgotten and invisible, but hard-working Merchant Navy seafarers, who kept Britain afloat during both World Wars.
It also celebrates the dependence on modern-day merchant seafarers who are said to be responsible for more than 90 per cent of the UK’s imports.
Coun Harrison said: “Merchant Navy Day offers us a chance to reflect on and appreciate the bravery and dedication of all who have served in the Merchant Navy.
“The flag-raising ceremony is a meaningful way to pay tribute, and we warmly invite residents to take part in this act of recognition and support.”
