STUART Watkiss insists Kidderminster Harriers are only looking up the table after securing a home win against Bedford Town in midweek.
Goals from Jack Clarke and Dan Mooney sealed the points for Harriers after Ellis Brown’s early goal put the visitors ahead at Aggborough.
The result lifts Kidderminster up to fourth in the National League North table, eight points behind leaders AFC Fylde who have a game in-hand.
And Harriers assistant boss Watkiss insists Adam Murray’s side must continue to strive to climb up the league table.
Watkiss said: “No one was more disappointed than the staff and the players with what happened against Alfreton in the last minute.
“We were excellent in the second half [against Bedford] and we should have been out of sight again. Everybody deserves a great deal of credit.
“Human nature is to protect a lead. It’s certainly not the instructions coming from the dugout to the players. We had the chances to extend the lead.
“The main thing is we’re creating the chances and getting into real good goalscoring positions but we do have to start taking more of them.
“Until we do, we’re always going to have uncomfortable last five or six minutes.
“We’re looking up the league now and that’s what we’ve got to strive to try to achieve.”
Kidderminster overturned an early deficit against Bedford to stretch their unbeaten run to five matches.
And Watkiss praised the reaction Harriers showed to going behind and stressed the importance of drawing level so soon after conceding the opening goal.
Watkiss added: “We get the disappointment and the frustration [after conceding an early goal] but the lads responded in the best way.
“It was important we got back in the game pretty quickly just to settle everybody down, the fans included.
“In the second half there was only one team who were going to win it. We want to keep the unbeaten run going.
“The sign of a good team is when a run eventually comes to an end, once you get beat it’s how quickly you can get back on the horse again.
“There’s always a right hook waiting for you in football and it’s just about how you deal with it.”
Kidderminster are next in action against Darlington on Saturday, November 8 with kick-off at 3pm at Aggborough.
